While Summer is a time to slow down and enjoy nice weather, slummer slide--learning loss that occurs during school-free months--can leave children behind when school starts again. Luckily, the Library has a number of programs to help keep kids learning and engaged all summer long. And since the Library is free for all Calgarians, even low-income students (who are particularly at risk for learning loss) can access these educational activities. The TD Summer Reading Club encourages children to read regularly and track their progress to win great prizes. All kids can participate, including those who have difficulty due to a physical, visual or learning disability, thanks to a partnership with the Centre for Equitable Library Access. This year, the Library is also introducing the Million Question Challenge, which encourages children to become curious and engaged with the world around them with a question journal, prompts, programs and wonder stations at community libraries and other fun spots around the city.
And of course, we haven't forgotten teens! Youth Read keeps young adults reading throughout the summer with online challenges, a GoodReads group, and a virtual summer camp for high school students interested in learning about video games.
